Eight Thoughts About Pressured Living

Anxiety caused by pressure drains us and makes life seem to fly by. Sometimes we forget we are in control, to a great degree, of our perceptions. No matter how long, how difficult or how serious our problems or responsibilities appear, we are not just at the mercy of our circumstances. Here are some ideas for consideration:

1. You can choose daily to be calm, observant, pleasant and thankful, even when huge concerns loom ahead. Each of us has the power of control over our thoughts and speed of thinking. Realizing this is the first step to slowing down.
2. Feeling rushed is the largest sense of tension in most people's lives. You may not be in control of what is due or when, but you do control, to a great degree, whether to feel pressure about it. You alone decide what is most important. 
3. About any concern or situation, ask yourself, "Will going at this challenge at a hectic pace with a feeling of anxiety likely improve the outcome?"
4. Relax completely, periodically. Yet, do not drift from relaxation to procrastination. Regardless of the size of your load, keep plugging. 
5. "Keep the game close," by being persistent. Even when it looks like serious consequences lie ahead. Give yourself a better chance for a close or winning score.
6. Prioritize responsibilities honestly each morning or the evening before. Be ready to set aside projects that are taking too long, unless they are absolutely critical. Find an end-run strategy to shorten them in that case.
7. Disengage chaos. It takes energy and gives back nothing. Stare back at chaos and refuse to participate, whether it takes the form of a person, group or situation.
8. Exercise is an excellent and free treatment for most personal issues and health problems that ail us. 20 minutes a day can be life-changing.
